THE ROCK FAMILY CHURCH STORY
Rock Family Church was born on June 6, 2004, when 52 people gathered at Mountain View Elementary School in Colorado Springs. Founding Pastors Dean and Kim Hawk led the charge, passionately committed to creating a church where people could encounter God’s presence and grow in their faith.
The church grew rapidly, and within the first year, RFC moved into a leased facility near Garden of the Gods and I-25, where the congregation expanded to several hundred. In 2008, Rock made a bold move to “Mr. Biggs Family Fun Center,” a 150,000 square-foot family entertainment venue with an event center that became their new home.
In 2011, God spoke very clearly to Pastor Dean and said, “It’s time for Rock Family to have a permanent home and be permanently planted in the city.” The search for a new home began. After considering more than 15 locations, Rock’s leadership came across a Methodist contemporary church campus at 4005 Lee Vance Drive. While initially unable to purchase the 72,000-square-foot building outright, the team negotiated a lease-purchase agreement and took possession on January 1, 2012.
In June of 2013, through the faithful generosity of its people, Rock Family Church raised the down payment and secured financing to purchase the building for $2.8 million. Over the next few years Rock’s attendance doubled in size to over 1,000 in weekly attendance. In 2015 RFC purchased nine acres of land for $1 million with hopes of future expansion.
In the summer of 2020 — at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic — God opened an unexpected door. Multiple developers expressed interest in the unused land. By spring of 2021, the board accepted a $4.7 million offer for the property with the goal of paying off the remaining mortgage, completing interior renovations, and pursuing land in the Falcon area for an East RFC Campus in the future.
January 4, 2024, Rock Family Church made its final mortgage payment — becoming 100% debt-free. Now with greater financial freedom, RFC is positioned to invest more than ever in ministry, people, and outreach in their community.
Today, Rock Family Church stands as a flourishing, welcoming home for people of all ages and backgrounds. Together, Pastors Dean and Kim Hawk and their church family continue to pursue their mission: to love God, love people, and make a difference in Colorado Springs and beyond. Their story is still being written, and they invite you to come alongside them in a purpose bigger than ourselves — advancing God’s kingdom together.
