THE ASBURY CHURCH STORY

Asbury Church began in 1962 with just nine faithful members who gathered around a simple but powerful vision: to build a church where people could meet Jesus, grow in faith, and serve their community with love. What started small soon became one of Oklahoma’s largest Methodist congregations—a testimony to God’s faithfulness and the steadfast leaders who have marked every season of growth.

Remarkably, only three senior pastors have shepherded Asbury through its decades of ministry. Dr. Bill Mason led from 1964 to 1993, shaping the church’s foundation and future. Dr. Tom Harrison followed from 1993 to 2022, guiding Asbury through nearly three decades of expansion, transformation, and deepened community impact. In 2022, Rev. Andrew Forrest stepped into leadership, carrying the mission forward with fresh vision and a renewed passion for discipleship.

One of the most defining moments in Asbury’s story came in 2004. As the congregation outgrew its original space, the church made a historic move to its current home at 67th & Mingo. In a beautiful display of unity and anticipation, the church family walked the miles together from their old building to the new campus on February 28—a literal and symbolic journey of faith into the future God had prepared for them.

Financial stewardship has always been one of Asbury’s hallmarks. Every building project in the church’s history has been fully funded by the congregation, allowing Asbury to remain debt-free and positioned to invest generously in ministry, missions, and community impact.

In recent years, Asbury has experienced another significant chapter. In 2022, the congregation overwhelmingly voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church, reaffirming their commitment to biblical authority, historic Christian orthodoxy, and Wesleyan tradition. That same year, Rev. Forrest became the new Senior Pastor, ushering in a season marked by clarity, conviction, and renewed missional focus.

Today, Asbury continues to expand its reach locally and globally. The church serves more than 480 families each week through partnerships with local food banks, sends teams on mission trips around the world, and provides resources and support for nonprofits housed in Asbury’s Development Center. In addition, Asbury is home to a satellite campus of Asbury Theological Seminary, offering hybrid Master of Divinity and Master of Arts programs that equip future ministry leaders in the Wesleyan tradition.

Asbury’s story continues to be one of faithfulness—God’s and His people’s. With a legacy spanning six decades and a heart set on reaching the next generation, Asbury remains committed to making disciples, serving their city, and shining the light of Christ in Oklahoma and beyond. The story is still being written, and Asbury joyfully invites others to be part of what God is doing next.
