THE WAYSIDE CHAPEL STORY
Are you passionate about reaching people for Christ? Do you want to be part of a church
that has a vision to reach the unreached while still providing a challenging and growing
environment for believers? Wayside Chapel may be the church God has been preparing
you for. Wayside Chapel was planted by members of Fairview Evangelical Free Church in
1960 when about 70 people began meeting in a house on Wayside Drive and Vance
Jackson, about two miles SE of our current location. After some seasons of regular growth,
Wayside moved to our current location in November of 1987. To add capacity to our
current three–building campus, we have also purchased eleven homes on an adjacent
street, which serve as meeting sites for Sunday studies and Life Groups, as well as mission
houses for missionaries on furlough
Wayside is part of the Evangelical Free Church of America, which is a denomination of
1600 churches characterized by local church autonomy and unity around the core
essentials of our faith. The EFCA has an excellent overview video on their website – check it
out at efca.org. You’ll notice two things that EFCA has valued over its history: 1) unity amid
diversity, and 2) missions through church planting. Both continue to be part of our DNA.
You’ll see both values here at Wayside. This year we planted our eighth church – Christ
Community Church in the Stone Oak area.
In Wayside’s early years, multiple Senior Pastors served as the church searched for its
identity. But as of late, the church has experienced great stability in the Senior Pastor
position, as Steve Troxel served in the role for 31 years, and was then succeeded by our
current Senior Pastor, Dr. Roger Poupart, who has led our congregation for over 17 years.
Pastor Roger has done a phenomenal job of creating a culture of leadership development,
as he empowers a gifted team of diverse leaders. These leaders are committed to
furthering the vision statement of Wayside Chapel, which seeks to be a community, rooted
in the Word, reaching out to the world, and reproducing Christ-followers. Wayside Chapel
is a multi-generational and multi-ethnic church marked by expository preaching as well as
local and global missions, and it’s a church that is primed to impact generations to come.
