THE COPPER HILLS CHURCH STORY
Upon arriving in Arizona, Brad and Elfie knew Jesus was calling them to start a
church in NW Peoria and to get to know as many people as possible. They
decided the best way was to meet their neighbors. On Friday nights, they would
pray for all the families. On Saturday morning, they would go door to door asking
the quintessential question: “Do you attend a church? If not, why do you think
people don’t attend?”
With a desire to understand their new community, Brad and Elfie quickly learned
the community’s perspective of the local church was that they believed that they
did not associate the local church with Jesus nor did the local church represent
the love of Jesus. That perspective shaped what Copper Hills Church would
become: a church that would intentionally, over time, be mistaken for Jesus.
Over the next several years, Copper Hills was a portable church in theaters and
schools. As the church family grew, a search for a permanent home ended when
the land on which the campus currently sits was purchased.
With a permanent home in West Wing secured, the question arose: “What will we
build?” The heart of this question wasn’t what a permanent space could do for us
but rather it was “What can we build that will serve these people and this
community?” After meeting with civic leaders, it was clear an Arts Center would
be a huge asset to the community. A space they would think of as their own. The
campus opened in 2016 with the Main Auditorium and Family Life building. The
space for the Center for the Arts and Well Coffee Co. was completed in 2019
giving the community the space where it could gather and encounter the real
Jesus.
The intent for the space is based on the way Jesus turned an ordinary
conversation with a woman in the community well as described in John 4. That
encounter forever shaped her life and the lives of those in her community.
Copper Hills Church aims to do the same: to create a space where no perfect
people are allowed, where you can come as you, and encounter Jesus in a
meaningful and life-giving way.
